Hamburg, the port city

Hamburg is the German capital city of happiness; surveys have confirmed that the metropolis of the north is home to the happiest residents! The reasons are easy to find; the port city simply has a special flair. In this cosmopolitan city there’s always something going on. The many parks invite you to go for walks, undertake sport or simply relax. There’s everything that you’d expect from a culture city: restaurants, museums, art galleries and major events, places of interest, leisure facilities, theatre and shopping opportunities, world-renowned trade fair exhibitions; and last but not least the fantastic nightlife, which is not only limited to the Reeperbahn!

From Adventure to Zeitgeist

Hamburg offers something for every purse and taste, for example the district of St. Georg in the city centre situated on the Outer Alster, with its many cultural and shopping opportunities. Sport is also a huge theme in Hamburg: on the lake, in the pool, with balls, on two or four wheels, or in the shape of the two Hamburg football clubs HSV and St. Pauli, which are always a talking point in the city.

A beloved destination for tourists is of course the port, along with the Speicherstadt, which has been a listed area since 1991. After a harbour tour on a barge, a visit to the fish market or the port museum Oevelgönne, it’s then worth taking a lovely long walk along the port entrance back into the city centre. Admire the variety of boats and the huge ocean steamers, like tower blocks passing by – a view which landlubbers only see on TV! Following your stroll, feast in one of Hamburg’s diverse selection of restaurants. A visit to the Dungeon is not for the faint-hearted. Here the history of Hamburg comes alive: interactive theatre to make your flesh creep. You should allow plenty of time to visit the Miniature Wonderland: the whole world in small format, including moving objects like trains and ships. Look out for the funny details that are hidden everywhere around the site.

From Arrival to Zest

Hamburg is a fashion metropolis, shopping and trade fair city, and delightful for outings of every kind. The Inner Alster entices you to take a boat trip; the cafes with their fantastic views invite people to linger. Whether you’re coming to see the musical “Lion King”, you want to climb the ‘Michel’, experience the biggest port festival in the world, or visit north Germany’s best known golf fair; there are enough reasons to journey to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.
You’ll fall in love with the architecture, history and atmosphere – and that special something that you can’t quite put your finger on.
